Implication of Schizotypy as a Personality Trait Essay
Implication of Schizotypy as a Personality Trait Gruzelier (1996) suggest that ââ¬Å"schizotypy consists mainly of impulsive non-conformity, social anxiety, positive features such as unusual perceptions, and negative features such as introversions.â⬠(Cited in Miller P, et al. 2002, p.179). In this essay one would like to explore the definition given to ââ¬Ëschizotypyââ¬â¢ and to give a brief discussion on this concept and whether schizotypy is a single trait or whether there are more factors to be considered, for it was conceptualized by Eysenck as a single personality trait named psychoticism, however it was Claridges work that suggested that this personality trait was much more complex, and that suchâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦146). It was also suggested by Cooper that the concept of schizotypy, therefore, is said to have much in common with Eysenckââ¬â¢s idea of psychoticism. (Psychoticism is one of the three traits used by the psychologist Hans Eysenck in his P-E-N model (psychoticism, extraversion and neuroticism) model of personality. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Mental_illness_diagnosis_by_DSM_and_ISCDRHP - 20k ) Both these traits are thought to predict the risk of developing schizophrenia, but researchers such as Claridge have tried to predete rmine all the main symptoms of schizophrenia from the clinical to the non-clinical population. It was said that Eysenck focused more on impulsive, sensation seeking, cruel and solitary behaviors, who only mildly referred to the perceptual distortions or cognitive and attention problems. Therefore he concluded that even if the traits have some similarities, they are unlikely to be identical. (Cooper, 2002, pp. 146-7). To determine whether schizotypy is a single trait can be complicated in the fact that if a personality disorder description should include, at minimum, criteria relevant To a personââ¬â¢s characteristic patterns e.g. 1) thought, 2) affectivity, 3) motivation, and 4) behavior, the question that arisen to Westen, D., and Shedler, J. when researching the classification of personality disorders, is ââ¬Å"how to develop a classification system forShow MoreRelatedOpenness in Personality10561 Words à |à 43 PagesTraits are consistent patterns of thoughts, feelings, or actions that distinguish people from one another. Link Cause Effect And Prevention Of Pressure Ulcers
A pressure ulcer is an area of skin with unrelieved pressure resulting in ischemia, cell death, and necrotic tissue. The constant external pressure or rubbing that exceeds the arterial capillary pressure (32 mm Hg) and impairs local normal blood flow to tissue for an extended period, results in pressure ulcer (Brunner and Smeltzer, 2013). According to National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel, 2014, pressure ulcers are a major burden to the society, as it approaches $11 billion annually, with a cost range from $500 to $70,000 per person pressure ulcer. It is a significant healthcare problem despite much investment in education, training, and prevention equipment. This paper includes two different studies to link cause-effect and prevention of pressure ulcers. Although it makes sense that repositioning will make a difference to the pressure ulcer incidence, but the challenge lies in determining how and how often the patient should be repositioned. According to the first article, ââ¬Å"A randomized controlled clinical trial of repositioning, using the 30o tilt, for the prevention of pressure ulcers,â⬠adopting the 30o tilt and three-hourly repositioning reduces pressure ulcers as compared to 90o tilt and six-hourly reposing at night, along with the usual care. Mental Disorders Essays - Psychiatric Diagnosis, Abnormal Psychology
Mental Disorders There are many diseases and disorders that may affect the human mind. Some of these are serious, while others are minor and may not even be noticed. Some of the disorders and diseases to be covered in this report are delirium, dementia, and schizophrenia, also a discussion of specific symptoms and treatments available for the different disorders. A mental illness is defined as any disease that affects a persons mind, thoughts, emotions, personality, or behavior. For any mental illness, as in a physical illness, there are symptoms that make it possible to identify when a person is suffering from a mental disorder or illness. Some of the more common symptoms of these disorders include extreme moods, sadness, anxiety and the inability to think clearly or remember well. Just because a person may experience some of these symptoms it does not mean that he or she is suffering from an illness. Almost everyone at sometime in their lives will not be able to think clearly or be in a bad mood. These characteristics are just part of human nature and are more than likely than not just a passing mood that will pass in a few moments. A diagnosis of a mental illness may be necessary if the symptoms occur so often that they interfere with the persons everyday life. An amazingly large number of Americans have mental illnesses, approximately 43% of the entire population of the United States. Although most of these are not serious, about 3% of the American population have a mental illness that can be classified as serious. This small population of the public will require treatment to either relieve or cure them of their illness. Since the 1950s, treatment for mental illness has greatly improved and has made recovery faster. These improvements will help the majority of the people who seek treatment return to their normal lives faster. There are two basic terms used to describe the seriousness of mental illness that a person has. The terms used are neurosis, and psychosis. A neurosis is the term used to describe a mild disorder that may cause a small amount of emotional stress, but does not cause a great deal of interference in the patients everyday life. The term psychosis is used to describe a severe mental illness that is strong enough to prevent someone from performing as they normally would. The term insanity is used to describe a person with a mental illness. This is not a medical term. It is actually a legal term that is used in court to try to prove a person to not be legally responsible for their actions. There are more than one hundred different types of mental illness. They are divided into ten categories. These categories include delirium, dementia, schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, dissociative disorders, somatoform disorders, personality disorders, eating, and finally substance disorders. The first of these categories, delirium is when a person is not aware of their environment and can be distracted very easily or become confused. Sometimes a delirious person may not know where or who they are, their speech may be hard to follow and be very disorganized. Delirium however is not usually a long lasting illness and the person is over it in a week or so. A second form of mental illness is dementia. Dementia can be diagnosed by a loss of the ability to remember and judge things appropriately. A person with dementia may have a difficult time with remembering names, conversations, and not follow rules or laws. Dementia occurs mostly in elderly people and is the result of illnesses such as Alzheimers disease that destroys brain tissue. A third, and very serious type of mental illness, is schizophrenia. This disorder affects a persons way of thinking, their emotions, perceptions, and their behavior. It is determined that a person has schizophrenia if he or she displays one or more of the following characteristics. One of these characteristics that a person may hear voices even tough they are completely alone. Another characteristic is that the person may feel persecuted for no apparent reason.(World Book Encyclopedia). Other more subtle symptoms of this disease include a decrease in the persons ability to work, their inability to maintain personal relationships

How to Make Pure Sand (Silicon Dioxide) in a Lab
How to Make Pure Sand (Silicon Dioxide) in a Lab Sand that you find on a beach consists of several minerals and organic matter. If you could separate out the impurities, you would have pure sand, which is silica or silicon dioxide. Here is how to prepare pure sand yourself in the lab. It is an easy project that only requires a few chemicals. Ingredients for Sand sodium silicate (make sodium silicate yourself)sodium bisulfatewater Make Pure Sand Mix together 5 ml sodium silicate solution and 5 ml water. In a separate container, use a glass stirrer to mix 3.5 grams sodium bisulfate into 10 mL of water. Keep stirring until the sodium bisulfate dissolves.Mix the two solutions together. The resulting gel that forms at the bottom of the liquid is orthosilicic acid.Place the orthosilicic acid into a heat-safe glass or porcelain dish and heat it over a burner flame for about 5 minutes. The orthosilicic acid dries to form silicon dioxide, SiO2, which is your pure sand. Sand is non-toxic, but it presents an inhalation hazard since the small particles could become trapped in your lungs if inhaled. Therefore, enjoy your sand, but dont play with it like you might with natural sand.

Immigration law - Case Study Example Sonia wants to come for medical treatment. She doesnââ¬â¢t know how long the treatment will take: Sonia is not an EEA national, so she would not be provided medical treatment on the National Health Service (NHS) (Sedwill 2007). She would be denied entry to UK on this basis. To gain entry to UK, she will have to arrange for private treatment, for which she will have to pay for herself without the need to work during her stay. She will also not be funded through the public funds (Sedwill 2007). She will be required to provide a confirmation of her arrangements. She will have to specify the exact duration of her treatment to get the visa, without which she would not be able to get her visa extended after 6 months of her stay. Also a letter from a doctor would be required, stating the exact nature of her treatment and the duration. A confirmation would be needed that she would leave the Country after the treatment.b)Kristina wants to come and help care for her new-born grand-daughter: Kristina will enter UK on a visitor visa, which allows her to stay in the country for just six months (Sedwill 2007). Hence, she cannot stay any longer for the purpose that she is going, unless she applies for a multiple-entry visa. Her sponsors (her relatives) will need to provide a letter of sponsorship (Sedwill 2007), stating their relation with her. Kristina, being ineligible to paid jobs and funding by the public funds, will have to provide confirmation of financing her own trip, unless her sponsors decide to finance her trip... c) Justin wants to visit his brother who is an asylum seeker: Justin's brother is under protection by the UK Government (BBC News 1999). To gain entry in UK to meet his brother, Justin will have to get a visitor visa that will allow him to stay in UK for 6 months, and he must provide a confirmation that he will leave the country after that duration is over. He will be required to provide an evidence of his relation with his brother (Sedwill 2007), and before he can get the clearance, a confirmation by the Government of UK proving the asylum-status of his brother, and a permission letter to Justin by the immigration officer would be needed, allowing him to visit his brother. Justin will have to provide a confirmation, in the form of a financial statement, that he will be able to support his stay by his own means. As his brother is under protected custody (BBC News 1999), being a non-EEA national, Justin will have to provide a certificate of approval, without which he will be denied entry in UK as a visitor to an asylum seeker. d) Gregory has been accepted to do a university course.
